Last month we featured a report from Jacob Funds, Economic Value Approach to ROIC May Unearth Hidden Value, a method for uncovering outperforming stocks through unconventional means. Afterwards, we spoke with Frank Alexander, Chief Portfolio Manager of the Jacob Wisdom Fund, for further insight into some of the Fund's top picks.

One of the key takeaways from Mr. Alexander, and the report, is that investors should not rely too heavily on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) when analyzing companies to invest in.

GAAP are a widely used set of accounting standards and procedures, covering everything from financial statements to methods for recording accounting information. These standards may be commonplace, but that does not guarantee their accuracy – GAAP leaves plenty of room for the distortion (or omission) of financial figures.

The Jacob Wisdom Fund is one example of a mutual fund looking beyond GAAP data in order to unearth true value stocks. Inspired by the strategies of Warren Buffet and Stern Stewart & Co.'s Economic Value Added© method, Mr. Alexander selects stocks for the fund that not only bring in high returns, but that enhance the invested capital at their disposal.
