For those unfamiliar with StockTwits, it is essentially Twitter for the stock markets. Users specifically tweet about market trends, investment strategies and real-time company specific events. Much like Twitter tracks trending topics, StockTwits uses “cashtags” (ex: $V) to track the most discussed stocks, just like we track Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas on Twitter.
The most discussed tickers are usually given that designation because they are involved in breaking news, have seen significant changes in stock price, or generating a lot of speculation.
As promised, we looked back in at today’s close.
The Buzz
CHK was bumped from the evening’s list of trending tickers and out-tweeted by other firms reporting earnings.
Housing stocks overwhelmingly made the list with HCII, RAX, and Z. Their earnings came back positive and all three saw nice returns today. PCLN, however was not so lucky with its earnings report and saw a significant loss.
Here’s the scoop, with all the details:
1. priceline.com Incorporated (PCLN, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates as an online travel company. Market cap at $33.12B, most recent closing price at $665.12. Down 6.5% Earnings report not up to snuff, getting crushed at the moment, StockTwits volume in incredibly high. Stockpicr tweets, “$PCLN getting killed after earnings report.”
2. Rackspace Hosting, Inc. (RAX, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates in the hosting and cloud computing industry. Market cap at $6.55B, most recent closing price at $48.47. Closed up over 3%, earnings came back strong. Newbie999 tweets, “$RAX. EPS inline(18c). Beats revenue estimates by 1.2million.”
3. Walt Disney Co. (DIS, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates as an entertainment company worldwide. Market cap at $88.74B, most recent closing price at $49.65. Up 0.9% earnings coming a little later, investors seems excited. Anne1018 tweets, “$DIS after the bell. Bob Iger is the Megan Rapinoe of CEOs.”
4. Small Cap Bear 3x SHS (ETF) (TZA, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Down close to 3%, ETF for small caps, typically behaves against the S&P 500. traderjflaw tweets, “$TZA if S&P closes below 1400 = major bull trap complete = load up tza.”
5. Nu Skin Enterprises Inc. (NUS, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Develops and distributes anti-aging personal care products and nutritional supplements worldwide. Market cap at $3.08B, most recent closing price at $48.86. One of the trenders from this afternoon, investors most concerned with Citron report. TraceyRyniec tweets, “The two words a company CEO never wants to hear: “Citron report.” $NUS down 9% today.”
6. Cree, Inc. (CREE, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Develops and manufactures light emitting diode (LED) products, silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) material products, and power and radio frequency (RF) products. Market cap at $2.99B, most recent closing price at $25.75. Closed almost up 5%, earnings report was solid. Johhny tweets, “$CREE Trying to move above 10dma 23.43 good volume.”
7. Zillow Inc. (Z, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates an online real estate information marketplace. Market cap at $1.14B, most recent closing price at $39.64. Up 5.3% following earnings report, mixed opinions about it from investors. C0mmonMan tweets, “@c0mmonMan I am enthusiastic about $Z because of the housing “recovery” amd high short interest.”
8. Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (PANW, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Market cap at $3.65B, most recent closing price at $54.78. Up near 3.7%, people excited about it since IPO. IPOTrader tweets, “$PANW man I havent seen an ipo this strong in a very long time. Wow! Can u say winner.”
9. SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Engages in the development, manufacture, and marketing of home beverage carbonation systems and related products. Market cap at $839.84M, most recent closing price at $41.70. Earnings on the way, down over 1% in anticipation. Nycgoat tweets, “$SODA long into earnings. Let’s see how this works out. A few other earnings plays didn’t go over well 
”
10. Homeowners Choice, Inc. (HCII, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Market cap at $177.37M, most recent closing price at $20.11. Closed up over 5.3%, investors happy with its performance and that of the housin sector. Ivanhoff tweets, “The signs of improving housing sector sentiment are everywhere: $Z $HCII $ASPS; real estate brokers open new offices & party like it’s 2005.”
