For those unfamiliar with StockTwits, it is essentially Twitter for the stock markets. Users specifically tweet about markets trends, investment strategies and real-time company specific events. Much like Twitter tracks trending topics, StockTwits uses “cashtags” (ex: $FB) to track the most discussed stocks and ETFs of the day.
The most discussed tickers are usually given that designation because they are involved in breaking news, have seen significant changes in stock price, or generating a lot of speculation.
So, which names are generating the most buzz today, Monday August 6th? We checked in at noon to see what caught people’s attention.
The Buzz
At the top of the list are a couple tickers left over today from last week like LNKD and SKUL.
BBY was a top trender today, thanks to the news that the founder of the technology retail giant plans to take to company private, the stock was up big through morning trading. Precious metals have also trended so far today, this time Silver beating out Gold.
Here are the morning trending tickers, we’ll check in again at the close.
1. LinkedIn Corporation (LNKD, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates an online professional network. Market cap at $11.21B, most recent closing price at $107.70. Had a positive finish to the week, opened this week well, although the possibility of a short squeeze remains in affect. TripleDTrader tweets, “Actually everyone is caught short, which is why this thing keeps getting squeezed. RT @Bobbin4apples $LNKD everyone and their mom is long $$.”
2. Best Buy Co. Inc. (BBY, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates as a retailer of consumer electronics, home office products, entertainment products, appliances, and related services primarily in the United States, Europe, Canada, and China. Market cap at $6.B, most recent closing price at $21.24. Best Buy is most likely going to be taken private by the company’s founder, the stock us up around 10% following the news. Gssound is not so optimistic about it tweeting, “Fade of the day $BBY. And I’m not talking haircuts… Taking it private won’t work either. Remember $ULTE.”
3. Apple Inc. (AAPL, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Designs, manufactures, and markets personal computers, mobile communication and media devices, and portable digital music players, as well as sells related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications worldwide. Market cap at $577.16B, most recent closing price at $617.37. Up today over 1%. halfDayTrader tweets, “Should I trust this $AAPL run? Arghh…hate it to enter and it reverses back #middaytradingsucks #AAPL.”
4. Skullcandy, Inc. (SKUL, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Develops and distributes headphones and other audio accessories to retailers in the United States and to distributors in various countries worldwide. Market cap at $400.93M, most recent closing price at $14.75. Trending again, up around 3%, some think the rally will continue. Mikesmith2763 tweets, “$SKUL watch it run when it breaks 15.41 it will make your head spin.”
5. Nuance Communications, Inc. (NUAN, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Provides voice and language solutions for businesses and consumers worldwide. Market cap at $6.58B, most recent closing price at $21.75. Up around 5.5% following the announcement of new voice recognition technology ‘Nina’. Tradermarsh tweets, “Nuance launches Nina, a speech to text SDK that can understand who is speaking http://t.co/5LcgOXEq via @zite $NUAN”
6. Silver Wheaton Corp. (SLW, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates as a silver streaming company worldwide. Market cap at $9.77B, most recent closing price at $28.09. Earnings report not until Thursday, up around 3%. Silver rallying lately. CommodityHW tweets, “Four Little Known Factors Driving the Price of Silver http://t.co/sC4wmuyp $SLV $SIVR $SLW.”
7. Rockspace Holdings Inc. (RAX, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates in the hosting and cloud computing industry. Market cap at $6.12B, most recent closing price at $44.93. Up 6.5%, earnings report coming tomorrow. Zacklehner tweets, “Lots of people probably chasing $RAX here. Will get burned unless earnings are a beat and raise.”
8. American International Group, Inc. (AIG, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): The company operates property and casualty insurance networks worldwide and conducts activities in the U.S. life insurance and retirement services industry. Market cap at $54.17B, most recent closing price at $31.47. Third straight trading day its been trending, up over 2.5%, some don’t see this continuing. PhilC tweets, “$AIG i dont see much short term upside from here.”
9. American Capital Agency Corp. (AGNC, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Operates as a real estate investment trust (REIT). Market cap at $2.26B, most recent closing price at $34.86. Down a little over 2% through the morning, some see this a potential entry point. Jeeden tweets, “$AGNC possible bull flag forming – may add today.”
10. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX, Earnings, Analysts, Financials): Engages in the exploration, mining, and production of mineral resources. Market cap at $31.8B, most recent closing price at $33.70. Another metal company trending today, up around 3%. Liquid_Trader tweets, “#goldstocks moving up fast $NEM and $FCX new daily H.”
