Even though Samsung lost a ruling against Apple in the United States, the growth of Android-based devices is undeniable. Android is not winning much ground in the tablet space, holding 28.8% share in 2011 versus Apple’s (AAPL) 66.6%. Yet Gartner forecasts Apple will lose 5.2% of the market share in 2012, as Android’s tablet share grows to 31.9%. Even Research in Motion (RIMM) is forecast to gain 2.2% of the market, compared to Microsoft’s (MSFT) 4.1% market share, up from none in 2011.
The continued growth in Android is very likely. Since 2008, there have been 500 million activations, with over 1.3 million activated daily. Google (GOOG) itself did not make money as Android grew, but this will change as the search engine company improves its content offering on the Google Play store.
Samsung predicted that its Galaxy Note II device will be twice as high as the sale of the Note I, which exceed sales of over 10 million units.
What are companies to look at for investors wanting exposure to the growth of Android?
