The company that SciFi authors have been dreaming up has actually been around since 2007, and it even had an IPO. It’s called Organovo (ONVO), and it’s another 3-D printing company with a very special twist: They print organs.
Well, they’re trying to. In a process called bio-printing Organovo is currently “printing” tissue sold for research purposes and drug testing. They are the first company to develop three dimensional tissue.
They have successfully engineered several different tissues, including lung and cardiac muscle. This technology is currently being used as a supply of test-tissue to pharmaceutical companies.

Where the company can go with this technology is mind-blowing. Consider, they hope to create fully grown organs, ready for transplant. This could revolutionize the health care industry, especially on the donor side. Long waits for donor matches could be a thing of the past, as people with cancerous organs could simply swap them for some that are cancer free if this technology turns out to flourish to its fullest potential.
The idea has been presented in movies and television shows but what was once a dreamed fiction is slowly becoming a reality. Organovo is most likely a long-term stock to own, but has shown significant gains since its IPO in February.
