China's first family has embraced home-grown technology. Will the world share their growing appetite for Chinese tech stocks?

China's first lady Peng Liyuan ditched her Apple iPhone 5 (AAPL). Apparently she's no longer looking at American brands as the way to uphold her trendy image.

Instead she's opted for the Nubia Z5 mini, made by ZTE, a Chinese technology company.

While it seems intuitive to Americans that a country's leaders would prefer technology and products made at home, that hasn't really been the case in China.

The country, which has become the manufacturing hub of the world, still has yet to champion any brands with the gain global name recognition as Apple or Google (GOOG).

In fact, it's the lack of good branding that's prompted the country to start relaxing some of its laws about censorship after some critics suggested that a ban on scienc fiction was preventing China from producing the next Steve Jobs or Sergei Brin.

China's first lady isn't the only one embracing her country's technology firms. Of the 70 Chinese tech stocks that trade on US exchanges, almost a quarter of them were experiencing spikes in institutional purchasing from groups like hedge funds and pensions.

So we set our screen with a higher threshold, only including stocks that had experienced at least a 10% spike in institutional purchasing over the last quarter. This left us with 7 companies on our list.
