As earnings season wraps up, we decided to screen the S&P 500 for stocks with a recent history of positive earnings surprises, for 4 consecutive quarters, that have yet to report their earnings. (For S&P 500 stocks that have now reported 5 consequitve earnings surprises, click here)
The concept of an earnings surprise is pretty straight-forward – the quarterly earnings come out, and earnings analysts are “surprised” by how they don’t match up to their predictions. “Surprise” doesn’t necessarily have to mean shocking either, it can be the difference of a few cents between what earning analysts predicted and what the company actually reports. To be clear, earnings typically refer to after-tax net income. For this list we only use positive surprises.
Business Section: Investing Ideas
The following companies will report their earnings within the next week and a half. Do you think they can post a fifth consecutive quarter of positive surprises and join just 15 other S&P 500 stocks? It would be quite a feat.
Use the list below as a starting point for your own analysis.
