Demand for foods is growing faster than supply can keep up with, likely due to the increase in demand from China and use of agricultural resources for biofuel production. Players in the industry are responding to the phenomenon by positioning themselves to become major suppliers to the consuming giant, according to Value Stock Guide.
Agriculture could end up being one of the lead investments for the next few years at least, if the companies take advantage of the price inflation correctly. For instance, nitrogen based fertilizer companies are able to take advantage of the slump in natural gas prices, which makes their production costs lower.
Business Section: Investing Ideas
Since the demand is growing faster than supply, the likelihood is that prices will be driven up. Issues have risen in the past in response to food shortages, like riots in 2007 and 2008, but companies still were able to benefit from the increase in prices. If anything, global press about the food shortage issues should serve as a catalyst for price.
Below is a list of stocks that could benefit from the increase in demand of agricultural products around the world. Do you think they are well position themselves to take advantage of the trend?
